How can a ballet dancer grab a punk boy's attention?

I'm really into this guy who's a punk, but the problem is that i've never talked to him and I don't even have classes with him this semester. I just run into him frequently in campus, but i'm sooooo crazy about him! I think he has noticed that i follow him around and stare at him all the time! what can i do? i want to hook up with him!! Also, i'm a really shy, a ballet dancer and a good girl...is there any chance that something can happen between us?

How can a ballet dancer grab a punk boy's attention?opera.com

Believe it or not, most guys/girls are attracted to what seems like the opposite of themselves. For example, a ballet dancer like you most likely finds him cute because he is everything you are not- something new and exciting than what you are used to. By now, he is probably fed up with punk girls. Try using that to your advantage, like trying out some of his music. Play hard to get. When you think you are sure to run into him, display a small pin or patch on your backpack of a small band that he likes, and comment on how you don't like mainstream music as much. (will work if he is original punk) Make it seem like you have many sides, the soft caring you, and the fiery inner side; which relates to him. Slowly talk to him, or offer to make a mix CD of some of your recommendations. Easiest way to get a guys digits! Mostly be yourself. Everyone has different sides, just open them up more. If he doesn't turn out great, you might still like the band's music!

It's hard to say, you haven't said anything about him. Just because hes into punk doesn't mean he wouldn't be into a ballet dancer. But the idea of punk + ballerina is cute.

Should I do ballet?

I recently started taking a Jazz dance class. It's for Beginners and Intermediate. I really really like it. The only problem is everyone seems to know what there doing and there really flexible. I am going to do Jazz in the fall but I really wanted to pick up another class. I am thinking about ballet but I am not sure if I will be flexible enough or good enough. What should I do?

Should I do ballet?opera mobile

Ballet is excellent. It is the mother of dance (jazz, tap, lyrical, everything else all comes form ballet) so it will help you regardless of what other types of dace you persue.

It is excellent for developing your core which is what helps you balance and turn.

Ballet in general is very basic, That is to say there are basic steps you perfect and progress from there all advanced ballet steps come right from what you do at barre. Professional athelets frequently take ballet so the learn to be 'light' on their feet.

So yes, you should absolutely go for it.

Should I do ballet?imax theatre opera theater

By your profile, you don't impress me as someone who'd look all that good in tights.
My college dance teacher always said everyone can dance....Give a shot! At least try it! If you don't like it, you can always stop but this way you won't wonder! The flexibilty and muscle strength will come with time. Practice everyday. You can do it! Good luck!
I would suggest talking to the Ballet instructor or even the Jazz instructor. Just because "everyone seems to know what they're doing" doesn't mean they do, btw. Take a beginning ballet class (and don't WORRY about being GOOD enough - you haven't DONE ballet, how could you be good at it yet??), or even yoga if you are concerned about flexibility.
If you are just starting out, the yes I suggest to take a ballet class. Every single type of class relates to ballet. Also, when you take a ballet class it shows your teachers you are a dedicated person, and you are more likely to move up to a higher level sooner. When I was younger I had one bad year of jazz class, because I was little I stopped taking it. Now that I am older, I have realized that stopping jazz at an early age caused me to stop advancing with my friends. Now after 12 years of classes, I tell everybody about my horrible mistake, and tell them to do otherwise.

So, just take up the ballet class. It will really help with your turns and flexibility. So many ballet moves are also done in jazz, so it would really help.

Best of luck!!
my first year i took ballet and jazz.

in fact, everyone in my class did.

i guess it is great to do ballet because it gives you the flexibility and technique for other classes. I actually became flexible through jazz rather than ballet. do what you have to do but if you were to pick up another type of dance, I'd definitely would recommend ballet.

Should i do ballet again?

i stopped 3 years ago and i thought i would stop missing it as much but i havent. i stopped for good reasons but i think that now i should of just changed dance schools instead of stopping altogether. i always find myself doing all the old steps and everything. do you think i should start doing ballet again??

Should i do ballet again?opera sheet music

Yes - start doing ballet again. I can tell from how you write that you feel remorse for quitting 3 years ago. Start back up and be aware that certain schools will teach differently. In either case, it will be a good way to get in shape, meet new people and improve your posture.

Should i do ballet again?shows opera theater

I think that when you grow up with something such as dancing you should never let go of it. Whether or not your the greatest. As long as you enjoy it and if you dearly miss it, start again. You will meet new people, teachers, and a different enviornment. Good Luck!!!!!!!!
I think you should definitely start it up again. Besides the fact that it is really fun to do, it is also good for your body. I have been doing it for almost 3 years and I love it. Its also strengthens your muscles.
Yes, I think you should begin Ballet again!!!:)

It will get you further in life!!!:)

I think you miss it alot, :)

Happy Dancing!!!

Just change dance schools. :)
If it's in your heart, try again.
absoultly! if you find yourself doing the steps, you were meant to dance! maybe you should try a new studio if you didnt like the way your old teacher taught, or whatever!

Happy Dancinng!! %26lt;33

Too old for ballet?

i have been doing jazz since i was 4 yrs old and tap since i was six i have just started doing american jazz and was woundering if i would be too old to start ballet and maybe make it a carrer i am 13 and a half now and really determind?

Too old for ballet?listen to opera

You are NOT too old for Ballet. Nobody is too old for anything! I had heard a man in his 50s taking Ballet Class meant for beginners and is doing quite well. Well, perhaps he can go for Ballet Exam after sometimes. If you want to make it a career, it is also definitely NOT too late. I know a girl who start Ballet at 16 and is now training to be a professional. Well, you have some dance experiences and I believe you will learn Ballet well... But practice hard! Sorry, but helping much but YOU ARE NOT TOO OLD TO DO BALLET PROFESSIONALLY. Bear that in mind. Good luck for you and your Ballet!

Too old for ballet?concert venue opera theater

never too old. Go for it.
nobody's ever too old for anything. go for it. who knows, you may find out you don't like it, just because you want to try it doesn't mean you have to make it a career. you may find you want to, but you're only 13, don't worry about that now, just have fun with it =]
Go for it and good luck.
you can do it if you put ur mind to it look at that one science teacher who ended up pro baseball in his mid 30's and look at that UFC fighter who was a math teacher turned fighter now . you just have to stay devoted in your goal and have enough faith in yourself and you can do anything good luck.
I started when i was 13 and i am now almost 15, and i ahve really progressed. i have thought about it as a career, not followed that idea, but go for it and good luck to you.

It is good you ahve done other dancing, as this shows you have the ability to learn moves fairly quickly.

get yourself a good ballet teacher, practise, what other people dancin 9go to the theatre/get videos) as it really helps you to know what it should look like, and has been proven that if you wacth something you can pick it up easier.

Also just try your hardest, but dont be too hard on yourself if you get it wrong, and dont over do it.

PS 13 is not old to start ballet!

I love ballet it is by far the best dance. You will have to learn the french names of moves ect but give it time nd it will come.

good luck!
you mights start out with younger kids, just because you won't know the terminollogy but since you've done a lot of jazz then you should catch on quickly! you'll be fine!
no. have you ever seen the nutcracker??? those dancers didn't look young to me.
never too old 4 ballet
Ive been dancing since i was 4 and still love doing it. I was in ballet since i was 11 and as i got older everyone quit and say ballet was for babies so i was 1 out of 3 girls my age (15) that actually stayed in ballet. The world needs more older ballet girls in class that are serious like u to actually make a carreer out of it. I think u should defienatly do ballet and then later on u can start pointe which can get u far if ur in companies like me where u do pointe dances like the nutcracker suite in NYC. Go for ur dreams and DO IT! Only the best will happen when u dance! Don't give up! Hope I Helped!!!
You aren't too old. Just don't get too frustrated if you aren't as good as the other people your age when you start. You will get there if you stay determined.
no, you're not to old.but don't wait a lot to start with classes anyway. start as soon as possible. good luck!
If you have done other disciplines of dance you already have the basic things you need to learn to do ballet. You may have to look around for a dance school that has beginner classes for teenagers, otherwise you will be starting with the littlies.
no, not at all. actually ballet will help you with all the other dances that you do.
no! you can start. my mom didnt start until she was 17 and she did great.

In which Cecchetti ballet grade do you learn the entrechat?

In which of the graded levels of Cecchetti ballet (1-7) do you learn the entrechat.

An entrechat is when the legs cross each other two or three times in the air before landing. Sometimes referred to as a double changement.

I wish i could tell you, my ballet studio only goes up to level three. So, its in 4 or higher. We do use entrechat, but in my higher class, and its freestyle. We don't do Cecchetti in that class. Good luck finding out your answer! :)

Do you think guys who dance ballet are gay?

One day I went to this ballet. In the show everyone was dancing to beautiful music and doing splits and jumping, it was great. Not only girls were in the show, but guys too. Then these 3 guys came out with NO shirts on and they were dancing! You could see every muscle just move and contract. I mean all 3 of them had well built bodies. There were also these guys who danced with the girls and lifted them into the air and twirled them. But anyway, Marcus and Brandon they said that the guys that were dancing must have been gay. I said that they were just jealous because they didn't have any artistic talent and can't lift a girl up in the air all day. I think that a guy who dances is sweet. I mean I think that it's attractive. To express yourself in such a way is just beautiful and to be a guy who isn't afriad to show emotion through ballet dancing, thats just amazing. So what's your oppinon? Do you think guys who dance are gay?

Lose weight-for ballet dancer.?

I'm 124 lbs right now, i need to lose weight at least 20 lbs in one month because i know that i'm little overweighted for ballet and i know that my lines and jumps looks bad. Please help me. I'm really stressed about it and i feel so embarassing when i see a thin ballerina.

Lose weight-for ballet dancer.?movie theater

drink nothing but water

just remember that it's more important for a dancer to healthy than skinny.

Lose weight-for ballet dancer.?tickets opera theater

ballet is probably about the best exercise anyone can do, and it does sound like you are about at a healthy weight so you don't want to stress a body that does a lot of exercise and needs feeding properly and is probably quite balanced already right now!

I would talk to your instructor/teacher for ballet and ask if it is necessary for you to lose weight - although don't word it like that because i've asked agents if i'm "not thin enough" and they've freaked out that i'm gonna become ano.

Ask if you need to improve the condition/tone of your body or if your body is a good size for performance. he/she may be able to give you honest advice or a healthy eating plan.

We don't always see ourselves the way we are. I spent basically my entire adolescence (thus far!) thinking people were exaggerating when they said i was "skinny" or just plain lying to me. one day, i look in the mirror and realise i'm not that fat after all, total revelation for me - doesn't mean i don't have fat days from time to time. Although i probably dont spend nearly as much time as you do, in a competitive environment wear my body is truly important to what i do

or wearing slim-fitting leotards!

My advice would be to limit white carbs (like bread, donuts, cake and non-wholegrain pasta) and just keep dancing.

Oh, and see your instructor.

hope i helped

xx A
dont worry about it. im an overweight dancer too. i feel a little bad when i see sticks walking aroung my studio but then i think, hey they have no boobs or butts. i have curves and i like them so w.e. screw being skinny! : )
it is ENTIRELY UNHEALTHY for you to try to lose 20 lbs in a month... Seriously, a healthy rate of weight loss is about a pound per week.

i don't know how tall you are, but my guess is that you aren't even close to being overweight.

Eat healthy: fruits and veggies. Don't starve yourself. Try having a little more self confidence.
it is really good that u r taking ballet because it is really good exercise. a complete change of diet(just substituting, not taking out) for healthy thinkg, and about 30 crunches ecery morning for a while will help u get in better shape

hope i could help : )
124 lbs....What is your height? I am guessing that you are not as "fat" as you seem to think you are. In any case you cannot lose 20 lbs in a month - even if you stopped eating altogether. It is far more important to eat a reduced calorie balanced diet and turn what you think is fat into muscle. If you stop eating you will not have the strength to dance well and that is more important than your physique. I'd also skip pizza, ice cream and cheeseburgers w/fries. Good Luck - you will do fine.

Should I start ballet?

I'll be 14 at the end of February %26amp; I really want to start ballet. I've been wanting to for a while but didn't start because I couldn't find a studio for late starters.

I really want to be able to become a skilled ballerina and I'm willing to work hard but I can't find a studio!

I might also be too big? I'm 5'3" and 89 pounds.

Should I start ballet?home theater

Are you anorexic? Jeepers.

It's never too late to start something you want to do. I say go for it!

Should I start ballet?comedy club opera theater

If you want to I say do it!

no one is too big for ballet
go for it.
It is never to late in life to start something. Go find your studio and get busy. You are not in any way, shape, or form to heavy to do this.
I SAY GO FOR IT. IF ITS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO, DONT LET ANYTHING HOLD YOU BACK.
You are not too big at all!!!!!! It does sound fun though!!!!
I think that you should do it. It is never too late to do something you want to. Go for it!
I love ballet. if you think its our passion you should do it too!
YES! START BALLET!!!

Weight is the biggest problem when you get older- that's why some people need more training when they are young. But obviously, you seem like you are in good shape. Ballet teachers love (well my teacher did) it when their students are small.

You might not be able to be a professional ballerina, but you can become a skilled one, if you take 2 classes a day, every day. I've met a soloist from ABT who started ballet at the age of 14 or something, and now, she's in a professional company! All you have to do is to prepare yourself for it- know that you would have to be able to make sacrifices and many difficult choices. And you have to work very very hard.

What is important though, is that you need to know what you want to do after you are 18 years old and you graduate high school. If you like ballet so much and want to become a skilled dancer, you might be considering to join a ballet company. Or there are other choices, like ballet teachers, or majoring in college in ballet/ dance.

If you want to find a studio, into a search system, you should type in your city, and then ballet studio. (ex. New York ballet studio). You have to come up with something. Plus, all ballet studios should let late starters in, too.

Good luck!!!
too big? 89 lbs at 5'3" is like a stick, girl! And go for it, if you want to. I'd love to do ballet, but finding the late starter course would be difficult. I say check out the YMCA (i used to take ballet when I was 3, that's where I took it)
i say your height is perfect.
If you really want to start ballet, then you should definitely follow through with your dream.
when u find a good studio, start, with dancing lessons ur skill could improve, but it is an extremely hard job n such a bitchy cutthroat world though it looks so beautiful.
Being a late starter means you will need to work more and harder to be competitive with girls who have been active ballerinas for years. There's no reason not to do it if you really want to. Just go into it fully aware of the pain your feet will suffer. Some of the best ballerinas work so hard at it that their feet bleed from the extreme trauma they go through in their routines. If you are that dedicated then you stand a chance against them in competitions for jobs. Otherwise just take it up for a hobby if you can afford it. It's great for flexibility, stamina, strength, and exercise.
Go for it! I know loads of people who started late.... %26amp; they got into really good ballet schools. I happen to be the youngest in my class %26amp; there are 18-year-olds who just started ballet. If you really want it, whats stopping you?
Hey umh I always say that it is never to late to do anything and never give up. Okay so u have i weighed problem but, if u are series about this u should start by going on a healthy diet and do some walking. And drink a lot of water and ask mom and dad to seaport u
It's never too late to start, especially if you're willing to put forth the effort. Too big?! I'm 5'6" and 115 lbs and I've been doing ballet for 14 years!
I've always wanted to try ballet, but I was always too scared to do it. If you really want to try ballet, go for it! I wish I had, and now the workload at school is getting to be too much to do it. At your age, you should be figuring out what you want to do in life, so trying lots of different things is good.

You are definatly not too big. I am 14 and I am 4'10" and weigh about 80 pounds. I think you should go for it.
Wow.... your too big? who told you that, you sound anorexic small...
your definitley not too big. so go for it! if thats what u really want then do it especially if ur willing to work hard. best of luck. hope this helps.
sure go 4 it!
Go for it kiddo, and don't let anybody tell you different! I know some adults who are beginners and they're doing fabulous!

Also try looking at ballet books and videos. Listen to classical ballet's like Giselle, The Nutcracker, and Swan Lake. Adapt to the music. Let it become a part of your body.

Watch the following movies: Save the Last Dance, Save the Last Dance 2, Center Stage, and Billy Elliot

Best of luck kiddo!
r u anorexic or something? 89 lbs at 5'3'' is skinny

Should I enroll my son in ballet?

We have a excellent magnet school through the local ballet company that offers ballet training during the school day. The school is only grades 3-5. I don't see a problem with enrolling my son in this school, but i'm afraid that other kids will make fun of him (other boy's that are closed minded). My son is a gymnast also, but the kids at school think that is cool. He is going to be 8 this summer and he seems interested in the program. It would normally be a very expensive school, but since it is through the public school, it is free. Best school in our district, which is #1 in the state. I don't want to pass up such a good thing, but I also don't want to set him up to be picked on......what do you think???

Should I enroll my son in ballet?movie theatre

If he wants to do it too, he should go for it. He can tell any "teasers" that football players are even required to take ballet and that it is very helpful to his gymnastics (true statement). Who knows, the other boys may think it's cool too and want to join. Just because a boy likes ballet doesn't mean he's gay. Being a male dancer (or gymnast) is being a strong and athletic individual.

Should I enroll my son in ballet?playhouse opera theater

Yes you should, its a good age and kids will be kids

as long as he is happy let him be.
Well just see if he would want to do it. And if he likes it and isn't worried about being picked on then keep him in it. If he starts to get picked on then just take him out of the program. But definitely try.
My opinion - enroll him in martial arts! He's got a great head start if he knows gymnastics!

That way, you don't have to worry about him so much when he's a teenager cos you know he knows how to attack people and defend himself as opposed to (no offence) being able to do ballet... If I ever had a kid (boy or girl) it would be doing martial arts from the time it could walk so I wouldn't have to worry about em ever being too hurt if some unsavory person launched an unprovoked attack, as the crazy people out there seem to do these days!
well,

i feel, you shouldnt, for the sake of his dignity in school..

and under no means should you enroll ur son in ballet class...

with the only exception being if he himself really wants it..

really wants it..
are there no basketball camps available?
He is going to be picked on but the extent depends on the people he goes to school with and your sons personailty. If your son is really into it and wont let comments bother him sign him up. (i doubt other kids will do any more than teasing)
Well, if your son is happy with that then you should go for it .Its a very unique thing to do, its fun.
go for it if your son loves it. or try it, if he doesn't enjoy it then stop. why? because i am a 14 year old girl who wish i started ballet. and i regret a lot about it. your son will not if he tries it out now. just give him a chance mum, you'll never know. maybe someday he'll become a world famous abllet dancer?
Ballet is great to help him improve in gymnastics. (Particullarly the floor routine) I say you should send him. My brothers do gymnastics, and although they show no interest in dance, it would clearly help. When I did gymnastics, I took ballet on the side.
yes you should enroll him we need more boys if people make fun of him i will bash them for you oh and if he really wants to do it that is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is up to him, if he has a passion for Dancing. Go ahead, one of my best friends danced for a year.
I play basketball and my coach has just set me up to go to some ballet classes with an instructor he knows to help parts of my game like jumps, using less energy, better balance and so on. I am a bit worried about being teased too and will feel an odd one out (there are no other guys in the class I am going to). But if your son wants to do it, why not. If he doesn't then I wouldn't force him either. If it's free maybe he can go and if he changes his mind, then no big deal either.

Jordan
well my little brother did ballet and he got picked on constanly by boys and girls. they would call him a fag and for a young boy, that's very hurtful. however if i was you, i would not want my son to miss out on it and i would enroll him anyways. just make sure to have a serious talk with him before hand and tell him that kids at school probably won't understand and therefore will make fun of him. prepare him for it. tell him exactly what to say to them and what not to say so he doesn't get in trouble and tell him what to do if the kids won't stop. also, if you don't already, ask him everyday how school went. he'll tell you if he's being picked on but you have to ask. kids can be cruel and they're not very accepting of boys who do ballet but it's very worth while. all you need to do is help him through it until he learns how to deal with those kids on his own.
i think you should he probablly wont get picked on when he can lift a girl up over his head on one arm!!it souds like a great program and if he is interested then yes it sounds eally good but only do it if he wants to he can always quit it sounds brill

How was the SAB Auditions? (School of American Ballet)?imax theater

I have auditioned for the summer program, and I have to say that it is a very intense school for people who want a career in ballet, not just people who dance as a hobby. Your audition will be like a normal class, but you should still read their website to sheck on this. It is very hard to get into, and they look for flexibility, good feet, strength, technique, balance, stage presence (do they notice you/do you stand out), and musciality. You really need to know what you're doing in that audition. I messed up a couple of steps, and I'm pretty sure that's why I didn't make it into the summer program. Good luck!

Pink tights and a basic black camisole-strap leotard. Hair in a bun and pulled out of your face. :)

That's the basic ballet outfit for any ballet class.

I hope you enjoy your class!
pink tights and a leotard are the basics, but it'd be best to ask your teacher, as they're all different and might allow you just to wear tights and a t-shirt.

Finding the leo and tights shouldn't be too hard, try your local dance shop, or ebay, discount dance etc. They should have a good few, although it can be difficult at times (seeing as I can't find one-lol).

Have fun dancing and enjoy!
tights, leotard, a skort or shorts over the leotard, and i tight fitting shirt(i like my leotard as my top and a little like those 1/2 shirts that you tie in frint over that) make sure its all black thoufh teachers like that and i everyone wears black they can see the whole dance and everyone together its harder when wearing different colors
Congratulations on starting a new dance class as an adult! Most dance schools have adult classes, and are a little more relaxed in their dancing attire. Wear something comfortable and that you can move in. It is best not to wear a t-shirt. Wear a more fitting type top and exercise (or yoga) pants. The teacher will want to see your movements, and if you wear baggy clothing, it will be difficult. Your instructor will probably mention something about what type of clothing to wear to class. Remember to smile and have fun!

Are there any ballet flats with arch support?

I am kind of tall girl who until recently has enjoyed wearing high heels that feel great with my high arches. this is however when i am not wearing my hiking boots, cleats, tennis shoes etc you get the point but now I have been spending a lot of time with a great new guy who is my height exactly and therefore i've been wearing ballet flats (with the same glam of heels of course!) but by doing so my arches are flatting out causing me a lot of disconfort when i am invovled my various sports. help need glam arch supporting flats!!

Are there any ballet flats with arch support?shows

maybe at AE cause i was browsing there and i thought I saw a pair of arched flats, or wedges. I think if you can't find any high flats, wedges are the next best thing! Good luck! xoxo

Are there any ballet flats with arch support?comedy show opera theater

they are all basically the same. I saw some in neiman marcus and nordstroms made by prada with more grip on the inside(of course seriously expensive) and even those lacked support for the arch. If they are messing up your feet don't wear them. I'm not tall, but I need shoes that support the arch in my foot and I cannot wear those because walking would be painful. So if your with a great new guy that's your height, I'm sure his greatness wouldn't mind if you had shoes with more support. i like white blallet flats but i want to know if i can wear white ballet flats all year round or should i get the black ballet flats

When can't you wear white ballet flats?concert venue

You can pretty much wear white ballet flats all the time, unless they don't match your outfit!

When can't you wear white ballet flats?events opera theater

nothing
DO NOT WEAR WHITE PANTS, SHOES, OR HANDBAGS AFTER LABOR DAY WHICH IS IN SEPTEMBER
you should get both. White is occasionally[sometimes] and black for most of the time. Like, if you are going somewhere dusty, you dont wanna wear white ballet flats. u get where im going?
you should get black because it is nice to have darker colored accessories for more um how should i say it... deep tones of apparell* spell check* and it is nice to have the option. Good luck be beautiful be stylish be yourself!
i LOVE white flats and I don't believe in the "labor day" fashion theory, but they get dirty so easily, you can't wear them everyday if you expect them to stay nice.

Any good learning ballet, gymnastics, cheerleading, or other dance websites?

Do you know of any websites that are good for learning dance, cheerleading, ballet, salsa, jazz, breakdancing tecnique. This is for the beginner, but sites as I progress would be great.

Sorry, this has nothing to do with your question. Just wanted to say "I love you" for your gun control response.
These are the types of activities, unfortunately, that are best learned in person (and physically). Therefore, I couldn't find any resources.
ummm.... kinda discountdance.com is a good dance website and depending on sports if you serch a gym w/ both of those sports such as all star gym i bet you could find so pretty good links
discountdance.com is a dance supply online shop.

Honestly, I would not reccomend trying to learn those on your own. There is so much to be gained by having a teacher to watch you and correct you as you go. You could easily injure yourself without the supervision of a trained teacher. Why don't you look in your local phonebook for a local studio/gym? Or see if there is a local parks and rec center that offers those types of classes.

If you want to learn about different dance forms, I would reccomend dance.net. It's a big message board place where dancers from all over come to talk about their love for dance. It's great, and you can get so much information from those awesome people.

What stretches can I do for ballet? How can I get the full way down for the splits, too?

I am thirteen years old and have never danced/done ballet, but I have alright flexability. I am starting ballet lessons in a little while, but what stretches can I do before I start, so I can catch up with some of the other girls? Is it too late to start competing in dancing? I would be dedicated to practising, but am I too old now?

Also I have nearly done the splits, but I am about 15cm from the floor. I just can't seem to get all the way! What stretches would be good so I can get the whole way down?

What stretches can I do for ballet? How can I get the full way down for the splits, too?tickets

1. Some stretches you can do:

Sit with your legs bent, the soles of your feet touching eachother, like a triangle. Try to get it as close to you as you can and push your knees down.

Sit with your legs straight and together. Grab your toes and try to put your head on your knees.

Stand with your legs apart (wide) and bend down as far as you can, keep your back straight and your bottom in.

Sit with your legs straight, together and point, trying to get your toes to the floor.

Caution:: Do not stretch too hard, you might pull a muscle. If you pull a muscle, it'll take a while for it to wear off.

2. It's certainly not too late to start competing!

3. You're not too old!!! I know of a ballerina who started at thirteen. If only i could remember the name... But still, you are NOT too old! Don't let anyone tell you that! You must train hard, though, to catch up to the others. You also might want to invest in some extra lessons.

4. Just keep doing the splits, push yourself hard. Try some of the stretches i listed above.

Good luck! Enjoy your ballet =). But remember, it's tough and you'll need to practise a lot if you want to be the best!

Yay a ballet dancer *hi five* l love ballet, best dance... apart from contemporary.

I belong to another board called. www.dance.net and they have a stretching board on it with lots of ideas for stretching. You being so young and average flexibility I reckon if you spent 20 minutes stretching every day you could get it in 3 months.

Here's a link for a great spilts stretches.

http://www.dance.net/topic/1616831/1/Str...

and this one has diagrams

http://www.dance.net/read.html?postid=43...

Just remember to warm up before you stretch
lie on your back with one leg straight down on the ground and raise the other leg and pull it down to your face. its the best stretch. if at first you cant reach your foot with the other leg straight bend your underneath leg or use a belt or towel under the arch of the raised foot to pull it down.

hope it helps it did for me.
My dance teacher taught us this stretch at the barre and it is what is helping me achieve the splits.

1) Face your entire body to the barre, feet in first position

2) lift one leg up onto the barre with a batma (bend the leg if needed, but straighten it once on the barre)

3) Turn your body to face opposite the direction that your leg is pointed (if your left leg is on the barre, turn right and face the right wall)

4)Bend your body down to the ground and put both hands on the floor. Now your leg is up on the barre.

5) Have a ballet teacher or friend lift your leg from the barre and push it back so that you are working towards 180 degrees with your legs. Have them hold your leg there for 30 secs. Hold it yourself for as long as you can. Then try your splits.
i'm fourteen and i just started practising goind down in splits last month end.now i'm abt going to touch the ground alr.it is possible.just stretch every day/night and day by day, you can go further down.good luck.but be careful nt to injure your leg muscle
good luck! i am 14 and i have been doing ballet for 11 years. just practice and keep at it! i am sure you will be able to get all the way down in your splits if you just keep stretching. it is never too late to start competing if you work hard and practice a lot you could still compete.
just keep practising
Hey what I found helps with the splits is go as far down as you can and stay there and count to 20 or 30. By doing this your muscles will start to release their grip and you will slowly start to gain progress. And you aren't to old to start dance I new a lady who started at 63 but she wasn't competing, but still your not to old

I hopes this helps you

Andepriss
Before doing anything, do simple stretches on your arms, legs, back, all of your body. Simple stretches you do before PE or any other sport are fine. Then, for flexibility I'd recommend these stretches:

1. Find a blank wall and lay down, pressing your butt against the wall, your legs stright up against the wall. Open your legs as far as you can, and hold it there. It hurts, but it works.

2. Lay on the ground with both feet straight out infront of you. Pull your right leg up and hold for eight counts. Turn your leg out so your foot is pointed to the left. Turn it back in and lift your leg in the air, stretching it the best you can with your back still on the floor. Then, take your leg and take it to your right side as far as you can while keeping both of your hips on the ground (this can be difficult). Repeat this on the left side also.

3. Simple things, touch your toes, sit in butterfly and stretch over, reach towards your toes while stretching, they all add up.

4. Sit in straddle as wide as you can. Stretch to the right, then the left, and then try to touch your head, arms, chest, etc. to the ground. Make sure you pull your knees back or this won't be as effective. You can place your arms under your knees to help with this.
in order to do the splits, i recommend stretching every day. Since youre thinking about ballet, im going to assume you know how to stretch your second position.if you have about a half hour stretch, (almost anything will work as long as you're thourough) then try to down into the splits and hold this for about 10 - 15 seconds, it should help. doing this i was able to do the splits in about 6 weeks

What does a ballet audition consist of? Am I right?

I'm 13, 5'10, and around 135-140 lbs. I take twelve or so 1 1/2 hour to 2 hour classes a week and am in Int II-Int III (only one more level) I was wondering if I had the right body type for a ballet audition. Also, what do auditions consist of? Can I wear a colorful leo?

What does a ballet audition consist of? Am I right?comedy club

Your weight and height sound fine.

An audition consists of a typical ballet class: barre, center, and across the floor combinations (adagio and allegro). As for what to wear, all audition notices will include what attire is required. If black leos aren't specified, then feel free to wear a solid colored leo with traditional camisole straps. Nothing too bright and newfangled with the design - and definitely avoid non-symmetrical styles. But to play it safe, be sure you have a spare black leo in your dance bag, just as you should always have a spare pair of pink tights as well.

What does a ballet audition consist of? Am I right?sheet music opera theater

Well, it sounds like to me that your body is just fine. Although ballet is kind of...rasist to body types, you shouldn't worry. As long as you are not obese and have talent, you will do well. Usually in an audition, if i am right, they will lead you through some cherography(sp?) and then after 10-30 mins(depending on how serious they take it. ie: serious=10, not so serious=30) you show them the dance. After that, they will either remove some people who just didn't get the chero or have everyone attend the interview. In the interview you tell the pannel a bit about yourself, dance experience, ect. After this, they make an elimination so-to-speak.

For the leotard, if it is a dance COMPANY you are trying out for, wearing the most colourful, full-of-life ballet attire you can will score you big points with the judges/pannel for "creativity". But if it is an audition for a dance SCHOOL or anything other then a dance COMPANY, wear just regular black leo, pink tights, pink ballet slippers/pointe shoes, maybe some rinestone bobbypins. Good luck!
i'm a ballerina, but i've never been 2 an audition, but wear a black leo. i wouldn't risk wearing a color one.

r u really good at ballet? i think u can go. wat r u auditioning for? that has a depending factor too! ask ure ballet teacher if she thinks ure ready! she knows more about wat ure body can do than u do! (funny how that works)

Who else loves Ballet heels/boots? Have you ever worn a pair???

I wear Ballet Boots all the time and would not even contemplate wearing anything else anymore. They are extreme and not for everyone, I do know this. But just because I wear them doesn't make me a bad person. Infact it makes me more open minded then most people.

P.S if you have nothing good to say... Don't say anything at all!

What are they? Heard of ballet shoes..........

Googled too,mmm do they do them in a UK 9?
I had to do an image search to see what ballet boots are, me being the poor little country girl that I am, and now that I've seen them, I wish I hadn't.

.. have you considered foot binding as an fun alternative? It'd probably be a LOT more comfortable...
Not sure they would go with my look but Wow yeah they are extreme , i think they look fab on some people and hell girl if u can get away with wearing em good for you !!
I now understand they have s%26amp;m connotations but I suppose they don't make you a bad person (I've never worn a pair and never will, I had to Google them to see what they are).

I do however think they look like corrective orthopaedic boots, I know that doesn't sound a good thing to say but you can't have it all your own way....
No it does not make you a bad person people can wear what they wish. However, you say you wear them all the time but surely they are not meant to be worn as a normal boot but just for a specific purpose. If I were you I would be deeply concerned what damage is being done to my feet taking a long term view.

But then it's probably just a fashion fad and you will soon relegate them to the back of the wardrobe...I hope so for your poor feets sake.

You can always show your kids what you used to wear when you where young and foolish, just like I showed my kids my very pointed winkle picker shoes.

Your feet your life and your arthritic bones.

PS Just a thought but the japanese girls would not be too eager to see these as the norm as foot binding is now banned.
Ballet boots (which I had to Google too) look like the most uncomfortable shoes ever and I don't believe you wear them all the time. But like you say it's your choice to wear them, and therefore your choice if you want to wreck your feet. And probably your back too. I hope they were worth it when you're hobbling around in agony in the future.
Yes I have a few pairs and I really do enjoy weaing them! E-mail me and we can chat about them!
I would love to try knee high or thigh high black patent ones. They would match with my catsuits perfectly.
yes I've worn a pair. - however i dont advise it unless you are a trained ballet professional as walking around all day en pointe is exceptionally bad for your feet if they aren't strengthen correctly!
Can't say that I have (would like to though, they look *wicked*!)

All the time (or outside) would make me too self conscious (being a guy doesn't help). Congratulation for have the option to do so.

As long as it does not hurt anybody else, people should be allowed to do/wear whatever they like. Clothes don't make you a bad person, sometimes only where and how you wear them (or not).

How should I prepare for a ballet recital?

I am going to have a ballet performance, but I'm not sure how to prepare. I have been giddy about this ever since I started ballet, but now I'm terrified I won't be able to be ready for it properly and I won't be able to enjoy it. Help!!

How should I prepare for a ballet recital?performing arts

Practice standing in front of the mirror, just standing there and taking deep slow breaths. Ask your Mum/Dad/partner/friends if they would mind helping you to prepare by dancing in front of them.

Also your teacher would not put you forward for the recital, is he/she did not believe you were totally able as this would make his/her ballet teaching classes look rubbish. Remember to yourself "You are the best advertisement in the world for your teachers ballet classes" - this may also help your confidence because she needs you!

Anyway, the very best of luck and I am sure that once you start to dance, you will forget that the audience is even there!

breathe, focus, then relax. Always stay present, but focus your energy on pure motion

ull soon be used to it....

for me, having a copy of the music that i play over and over and over and over, whilst dancing the piece either in my head or for real helps me to feel prepared for performance. when it's your time to be onstage, just focus on the emotions of the piece, not your own. good luck, and have fun !
Practise in front of mirrors and whenever possible. Also do plenty of exercise to keep your fitness levels up and strengthen your muscles. Don't forget to do plenty of stretching too but if you're not amazingly flexible go gentle at first and build up so you don't do damage to your body. When you practise your dances don't forget to smile!
-make sure you know the dance (duh)

-make sure you have the proper shoes

-makeup

-hairspray(good for hair and because of its stickiness, can hold the ribbons on your shoes tucked in)

-lots of bobby pins

-mini sewing kit and safetypins (you never know what can go wrong

-extra pair of tights

-preferably an extra pair of shoes

-legwarmers (to keep you legs warm and your tights clean before the show)

-put the song of your dance(s) on your i pod and before the show/in the car listen to it and go through tha dance in your head

Should I do RAD or CSTD ballet?

RAD - Royal Academy of Dance

CSTD - Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing

I'm 16 and my ballet teacher just gave me the choice to take up either RAD or CSTD Grade 5.

The general comments I got from my other ballet friends were that the RAD syllabus' prettier with nicer music and is also more recognised, while the CSTD is more technique-based (i.e. more boring).

Is this true? What other differences are there?

Which should I choose?

Should I do RAD or CSTD ballet?performing show

I've done both.

PLEASE DO RAD!

RAD defiantly has better music, they compose music to fit the steps while CSTD just puts music to the exercises. And as you've said, is more well known. CSTD also puts a different spin on steps that are a little strange in my experience.

So, yep, RAD!

Hope this helps :)

Should I do RAD or CSTD ballet?opera score opera theaterRAD definitely! Report It

RAD is better recognised, and therefore probably more prestigious if you want to go to dance college and train to be a professional dancer.
The RAD syllabus is very very good. And more well known and recognized.
RAD is definately better!!!
definatly RAD for grade 5, the dances are really fun and like you said, the music is pretty too.. i'd do RAD but what did your teacher do? cos she might be better at teaching one rather than the other?? x
That 's is up to you. It's your choice. Follow ur heart. But the difference is you saves 2 years in CSTD because it only has up to grade 6. I think both are alright. It doesn't matter you if you go for higher level in major
If you ever want to go pro you need technique more than pretty music. That is what makes a better dancer go farther in their career, You tend to stand out, have better potential and will be noticed by the right people.

Should I quit ballet?

I'm just suddenly sick of it. My mom made me press on when I was younger, and back then I was glad she did, but now I'm 16 and I feel like I'm just wasting time and gas. I have to drive an hour to get to class, and I'm sick of not being able to hang out with my friends and not getting my schoolwork done. I wanna do something else with my life right now, because I feel like ballet just isn't worth it anymore and it's not fun. I wanna go find something new and different, like working at a hair salon, or maybe working at a boarding barn for horses, my sister used to do that. I just want something new and my schedule is to overloaded for me to just be myself.

Should I quit ballet?comedy show

By all means, quit ballet! Ballet is extremely hard work and if you don't like doing it, there is no good reason to keep at it. I wish all the kids in this section who get the idea that they want to work professionally in dance before they've taken one single dance class would see your story and understand that being a dancer isn't easy.

It is so, SO important that you do what you love and follow your heart! Ballet will still always be a part of you. No one can take away what you've already gained from everything you've put into it. You're only young once, so do what you want to do.

Should I quit ballet?greek theater opera theater

yes
i think u should listen to your "gut" feeling it all depends on you!! But dont let anyone tell you what to do
The gas issue is valid. Talk to your mom. Tell her your reasons, and ask her to help supplement the costs. I'm sure you can get your schoolwork done AND do ballet if you prioritize your time right. In short, I don't think you should quit. It's great exercise, good training, will show responsiblility when you go get a job or apply to college. It will benefit you in the long run.
Do what u want w/ur time. If u don't enjoy dancing then just don't do it. Although u have spent alot of time on ballet and it would look good for colleges, if u do not enjoy it then u should just try something new. U only live for so long enjoy ur life!
Welcome to burnout.....happens to almost everyone eventually. Before you do anything drastic, try to figure out exactly why you are burned out. There may be something else besides the list of things you wrote down. Your school year is about over, just finish this season and take the summer off - don'even think about dance, then see how you feel in the fall when the season starts again. You may have a change of heart.

Your Mom shouldn't "make" you dance - it is not productive and adds strain to a relationship. You can always pick up ballet again at a later date as your body-brain link will remember everything. Good Luck and don't feel guilty about this. It is a sign that you need something different - at least for awhile.
I am dancing too but if i were you i would not quit.If you were blessed with this gift and can dance really good then I would not quit.Ballet is the key to all dance categories. So I would not quit, later you might also regret this choice. But you decide.Hope you will keep on dancing like an angel.
I too am 16 and have been dancing for 13 years now, and like you i too am quite fed up of ballet. There was one point in my life when i had 9 extra curricular activites out of school and 6 of them were ballet. Ballets hard work and i wish people could see thats its not just some pointing and arm twirling!! Personally i had this same feeling around grade 6, but my mum managed to persuade me to keep going. But me being stubborn i gave up for 2 weeks, but then i realised how much i missed it. Fair enough its hard work and long hours, but in the end this is a talent that you have been given and the opportunity is there for you too take.

I think maybe what you should do is decrease the amount of lessons you have a week or even change classes. So instead of doing grades (as they are a lot more pressured as you haveto take an exam), take a free class. This means you dont have to dedicate as much time to it and you dont HAVe to go every week. If you do decide to do either of those options, it will mean that you can then focus your time on other things that you want to do such as boarding barn horses!!

I hope watever decision you make is for the best (long term wise!!). But i still think if you've come this far, why give it all up entirely now??
good fur u. just do what u wanna do but if u do any more sports and go pro ure probaly to late.

go with ure gut.

??????
oh yeah! i hate ballet. its too slow and boring
i went thru the same thing. maybe you're just burned out. take some time off from dancing. you can go back later if you want.

Don't develop bad habits.

Practice as if you are going to perform.

Stay focused.

I think you can do it . Try really hard and don't give up!
i have been taking ballet for three years starting at 10. My advice is to do your best and listen to the teacher.
thats great, if you want to learn quickly, always pay attention in class, stretch regularly. U seem just like me (Other than u being a girl) i started dancing and got into the advanced group after my first year, and im a quick learner too. If your a quick learner, im sure you'll do good in ballet, and as long as u stretch every so often too. good luck!

well I have been dancing 9 years and I have been blessed with great turn-out and flexibility. Umm...defiantly the butterfly stretch works ... umm if you just stand up and slide your legs down until your in a straddle dont go all the way down...keep your self about 5 in. off this ground (center split) hold it for a bout a minute and a 1/2 then from there go forward until ur body is on the ground and hold the frog position...arch ur back and then attemp to get ur head to ur feet...i hope this helps you =]

What I did when i reallllly wanted to get my split is I went against a wall and put my legs against the wall and then push..No I'm Not Trying To Make This Sound Slutty..but it actually worked..Now i can do my split!!
There is many simple ballet stetches that will help you in the long run. I have a horrible turnout as well, but my dance teacher told me this one trick that had helped me IMMENSELEY.

She told me to lie on my back with my legs in the air at a 90 degree angle; feet flexed. Then wrap an excercise band [such as the one shown at http://shop.justforkix.com/prodinfo.asp?... around the balls of your feet. Hold the rest of the band in your hands. Then, try turning out your feet as if you were in first position. The resistance of the band will create muscles that will infact make it easier to perform a regular turnout.

Hope this helps =]
For the regular splits, try lunging, keeping your knee from going over your toes. Then put the weight on your back knee and stretch your front leg forward and lean over your leg, then try the splits. For Chinese splits, put your legs on the wall and spread them as far as you can. Gravity will help push your legs down. And for hips and turn out, do the butterfly stretch or frog stretch.
side split stretches:

1st stretch:take a thick book and put it down on the ground then put one of your feet on it and go down into the splits position as far as u can and hold it there for like 2 minutes and switch legs.then do it without the book.

2nd stretch:put one leg straight in front and the other leg fully bended and try to touch your foot that is straight and hold it for like 1 min then switch legs.

3rd stretch do the splits as far as u can down and hold it for 1 or 2 mins and switch legs.

4th stretch:if u can do the splits then hold your front foot for 30sec-1min then sit straight and bend your back and extend your arms backwards and do it with the other leg.

5th stretch: do lunges

middle splits:

stretch:do it as far down as u can and hold it there for 1 or 2min and rest for a few minutes and do it again.

Why have male ballet and contemporary dancers been incorrectly seen as effeminate?

In many cultures, dance is seen as a very macho thing, but in Western cultures, dance, such as ballet and contemporary dance, is seen as 'girly'. This strikes me as strange, as it requires an athletic combination of strength, balance, flexibility, and charisma. The common reaction to a guy doing dance is an assumption that he's either gay, or extremely effeminate.

Why have male ballet and contemporary dancers been incorrectly seen as effeminate?ballet

Why the prejudice against gays? In America ballet IS considered gay but you are the one implicating it to be a BAD thing. Also my second wife got her Masters in Performing Arts from N.Y.U. with a MAJOR in Dancing and minor in singing. She told me that over 85% of all the males in her classes WEREN'T interested in women other than as friends.

So your presumption of it being "incorrectly" seen as effeminate is in itself incorrect. Most male dancers are gay (inc bi). But that doesn't mean that they aren't extremely athletic. The two (gay and athleticism) are NOT mutually exclusionary no matter what you seem to think.

The exceptions to the rule are few though one guy is depicted in a biographical movie in "All That Jazz". Roy Scheider played choreographer Bob Fosse who was EXTREMELY heterosexual and ENTIRELY unfaithful to his wife as he bedded probably hundreds of women dancers. That lucky DOG!

To reply to your revision... There is most certainly MORE gay-bi males in dancing. As for the American prejudice against the manliness of it well I can only guess. Look inside yourself, it just seems to be feminine. To dance for a man is to get in touch with the feminine side even if the man is hetero. A psychologist asked me once whether I "Would prefer to play football or fence". I replied "Fencing". He said that that reply indicates that I tend towards homosexuality. In a moment of eloquence I replied, "It only seems that way to your subjective view, fagbait". That interview degenerated from there. Good question. Do assigning gender terms to seemingly neutral activities simply come from subjectivity? Preconcieved notions?

Why have male ballet and contemporary dancers been incorrectly seen as effeminate?globe theater opera theater

I dont understand this either. I admire these men that carry out their dream to become a dancer, there are some exteamly talented male dancers out there and they should be proud of their talents.
because a large number of them are: GAY!!!!!!
becuse were not playing football... to kind of explain first its not the norm and ne thing thats the minority is put down thats human. Its the same for all the finearts i Dance sing anddo theatre i am mistakin for being gay (of wich im not...) its also that girls tend to be more pulled to such finearts b/c of well just the diff btw boys and girls boys naturaly are more talented at things reqiering large motor skills...(shp engines sports ect...) and girls are naturaly better at fine motor skills (dance sewing ect...) this is not to be sexist and say that people are limited to there sexes avarge talents just to say physcologicly thrers a diff there... however i sympythise as a danseure (male ballet dancer).

P.S. funny story after school one day i ran 100 yardtouch down (not inregulation odont play football this was one bet.) against my football teams 4 top tackels never being touched b/c i used dance to out manuvre them point turns chasses jettes ect. ending w/ three chaine turns it was belletic it was beautiful and for them it was embarrasin
I agree with you, it shouldn't be this way. Americans are so narrow minded about what is male and what is not. I like guys who sing and dance and stuff--I don't understand it either. I think it's just because Americans are comfortable with being narrow minded and prejudiced...

3 yeard old ballet music?

I need good ballet songs for little kids, like "this is my left foot", Gallop

3 yeard old ballet music?sheet music

One of the best places to get songs like "This is my Left foot" is on old teaching records put out on lables like: Hoctor, Stepping Tones, Statler, and Kimbo. These are all hard to find these days, I try to talk with older teachers who would have been teaching back in the 50's and 60's and ask if I can make copies of their old records.

As far as purchasing some, you can still get some of them on-line. Many have been made into CD's.

Can you help..going to the ballet Swan Lake..applauding?

i have always had a secret dream to see the ballet..Swan Lake..so graceful %26amp; i am mesmerized by the beauty and skill of the dance - and now..my husband has treated me to actually go to london and see it in june...at the Royal Albert Hall...i am SO excited about it.

however...i am worried - do we applaud after an act - like you do in a musical? or is the clapping at the end? i'd like to know before i go...dont want to look like a dummy!! - thank you to anyone who can advise...and please..if you dont like the ballet - no nasty comments.

plus....what do you wear? i know jeans are not ok - is a trouser suit (smart) ok?...nerves are already setting in and its 2 months away!

Can you help..going to the ballet Swan Lake..applauding?headache

You can always applaud for a solo or pas de deux, and it is fine to applaud at the end of the act (just like in musicals). Like others have said...follow the audience, they will applaud when appropriate.

Dress up, it will make you feel magical along with a magical night at the ballet. Many women will wear nice evening dresses. A smart suit will be appropriate also. Gentlemen should wear a tie, and a jacket would look very nice.

Soak up the evening and all it entails! You will feel beautiful and will enjoy a beautiful ballet!. Also, if you tend to cry at a sad story, bring a nice hanky to dry your eyes.

Can you help..going to the ballet Swan Lake..applauding?paramount theater opera theater

Just wait and see what the audience does. Follow their lead. Have fun!
clap if you want to, but no dancing in the aisles.
You can applaud after an act, or even after an especially wonderful solo. And I agree with the other poster who said follow the lead of the audience; just clap when they do. A very chic trouser suit is fine, when in doubt, wear black!
I agree with Heart about how to dress.

About the applause, Ballet is less rigid than going to a Concert where you have to wait until the end of the piece. Generally people applaud after a solo, pas de deux and even after a wonderful corps de ballet moment. Even some times they applaud before as with the fouettees (32 turn done in just one leg) of the black swan in act two.

You will love it, it is my favourite Ballet it never ever tires me!

Have fun, fun, fun and then tell us how it went! ;-)
You'll know when to applaud... it'll just feel right, plus there will be 100's of people there, so if you're not sure, just follow their lead!

As for what to wear maybe check your tickets first. If there is a Dress Code, ie Evening dress, it will be mentioned on the ticket. Dress up but wear something you will feel comfortable in, as you will be sitting for quite a while. Wear trousers or skirt and a nice top, a trouser suit may feel a bit too formal. But most of all just enjoy the experience, don't worry too much about what other people are doing or wearing.

Enjoy Swan Lake, it is a beautiful Ballet and if your husband enjoys it too, try and persuade to him to watch some modern works at the Royal Opera House as well!

Is it to late for me to take ballet?

I am 15 and I have been hoping to one day take ballet but I am not the smallest person in the world and all I ever see is pencil thin people who do ballet. Is it possible for a person who isn't skinny(or even close to it) to do ballet ?

Is it to late for me to take ballet?plays

It's never too late to take ballet, and you don't have to be stick thin to be really good. My ballet teacher started ballet when he was 18 or 19, and he's been in a lot of ballets. It's all about the passion, will, and commitment. If you really like it and work hard(and have fun!), you'll get good no matter what age you start. Taking ballet (with proper techniques) will actually help you to lengthen your muscles and help your posture鈥攏ot over night of course, so you'll have to have patience. Lots of studios have beginner teen ballet classes. You'll probably learn faster at this age, anyway. Just relax, try it, and enjoy it! If you really love ballet and have fun with it (while still working hard), you'll improve no matter what size you are.

I'm a dancer, and I've been dancing since I was 2. I didn't really start taking ballet until I was a little older. And still, I'm no stick! I have my mom's muscular thighs, big butt and flat chest! No body is perfect, and the beauty about dancing any style of dance is that no body NEEDS to be perfect!

But I also agree with what Jamie said above. My answer mostly supported the possible decision that you just want to persue ballet as a recreational activity. If you are thinking about professional ballet, really work hard at it for about three years, develop healthy eating habits. Dairy products are really good for dancers!

Don't let what anybody says discourage you though. Just really focus on your goals鈥攜ou really have the power to do what ever you want!

Absolutely not, in fact your feet wont be as deformed as they would growing in toe shoes. Great time to start, Good luck, you'll love it.
it's definitely never too late to start taking dance lessons. you shouldn't be intimidated--lots of people who take dance aren't stick thin. don't let your insecurities keep you from doing something you've wanted.

ballet is for all--whether you're skinny or un-skinny.
yes very much darling! i've seen big sized people in ballet and they're just as flexible, strong and graceful.

i started real late for ballet too, at around 17 and i'm very much okay. they don't have 'adult ballet beginner courses' for nothing, you know.

as long as you're passionate and dedicated about it you'll see results. all the best girl!
It isn't too late! Please just be realistic about what you want to do and what your body is capable of. Your body will adapt to it as you go. Ballet is a skill.....you have to build it!! Embrace it! Dance is a very healthy activity. It also teaches discipline.......and all while you are having fun!
May be u just think of it being to late haven't u ever seen my old boy's mum do it at chapel.

believe me it's not too late contact me and i will direct u to her place she does it even better is it ,.....no she does it best in accordance to those kid at daycare
no--go for it
Life is about daring and discovering, don't let anything stop you from fulfilling your dreams.
people sy its to late but i dont think so i think u can start at any age if ur willing to take the hard work.
Of course you can do ballet. You will have ot work hard to build up the technique that most people start learning at a young age, but if you want to learn bad enough, and are determined, you can find passion in dancing. I know from experience. I didn't start dancing ballet until i was 14, And believe me, i am not one of those pencil thin people you are speaking of, But with determination and enough drive I have taken and passed two Royal Acadamy of Dancing exams with fairly high marks. So, if you want it bad enough, it is definatly possible. good luck!!
I started ballet when I was 18 and pointe when I was 20. I definitely think you can start ballet and get good at it despite your non-pencil size. All you need is determination.

Good Luck!
You are never too old or too big for ballet. My only suggestion to you is that you decide where your ballet is going to lead you.

Do you want to do it just for fun? Do you want to seriously pursue it? If it is a serious goal for you, you might have to loose weight. I am not saying this to be mean and harsh. It can really strain your ankles and knees to focus too much weight on those joints.

Please realize that I am not saying, "Hey, you need to start throwing up and starving yourself." I had some of these issues and I have seen far too many girks go down that road. Just get in touch with what your body needs. You don't have to be rail thin, but the bigger you are, the harder it will get.

Also, you'll need at least three good years of ballet technique and training before you can begin pointe, if that's what you're interested in.
Absolutely, go for it!!! I had a dance teacher who didn't start dancing until she was 18. She was so passionate about it that she made it a career...she's amazing as well. She even did some Broadway work :) As for the weight....please don't be pencil thin! Dance should be for all body types. Besides, dance will get you into shape if you feel that you aren't. You should also try Jazz and Hip Hop, they are great fun!
its never too late to start ballet (pointe)!!!....even tho u don't have the "body of a dancer"...doesn't mean u can't do it..if its somethin u love to do, then go for it!!...ur feet will eventually form an arch, and ull be able to do ballet just as easy as every other girl!
Omg!! Absolutly not! Its never to late to take ballet! I love it!! It doesnt matter how big you are! It may seem like it but it isnt just for the skinny people it is for everyone! I really hope that you find a great teacher that will teach you all they know! Its unbelievable what you learn at dance, and the friends that you make that last a lifetime! I really love ballet and I know you will to! HAve fun with it and youll go far!!
Everyone can do ballet no matter what there size or age. All you need to do is concentrate and work hard. The only way you can not do it is if you give up. Some people think dancing is easy but it is hard too. SO just rember work hard never give up and do your best.
never is too late.....if u really like it...do it now!!!!

Can anyone tell me me where I can buy colored (blue or green or yellow) soft leather ballet slippers. I wear an adult size 10 c width and have been looking on the net, but have come up empty...any suggestions?

Have you tried DanceDistributors online? If you haven't definitely check them out. Otherwise, I think you'll just have to get white canvas slippers and die them. I've done it before, and it works well.

Get a pink pair and use shoe dye, Dylon. To get the exact colour you want. Don't be afraid to mix two colours together to get exactly what you want.c
I saw a bunch of them at OldNavy yesterday (Black Friday)...all different colors too.
you wont be able to find them any where. you have to spray paint them, and trust me, it works. my grandma is my ballet teacher and she always has to spray paint peoples shoes. but yeah, it would be nice if they sold different color shoes.

um, if ur a guy then why dont u just get regular black???
Professional ballet slippers?

Buy some with dyable satin.
Try this website called Jennetsdancewear.com
im not sure where you could find them. but you could always spray paint your regular ballet shoes.
You might have to dye them.
guys ordinarily don't wear colored slippers.

they almost always wear black....

in fact, i've never seen a guy wear anything other than black slippers.

((p.s.:he wasn't talking about the ballet flats that youu wear as street shoes. he's talking about REAL ballet shoes that youu wear for ballet classes.))
You will probably have to either dye them or spray paint them yourself.
You asked it many times and seem to be dissatified with the answers, for you're coming back with the same question.

There is no other way than dyeing canvas or satin slippers with fabric dye (Dylon, Ritz) or spray painting the leather slippers.

Can you suggest gifts for my (male) former ballet instructor?

I would have to say that I do not agree.I think if you tried to water ballet you would discover just how much physical strength and endurance is needed. As for golf, perhaps cut out the golf carts and beer breaks.
Hey,,,, lay off Big Macs,
No, golf is a very mental and physical game. It's just not as action-packed as hockey or basketball etc. It has a lot more mental aspects, like baseball. However, I honestly think Water Ballet should be in the dance category, not sports. Can't give a good reason other than it just doesn't fit sports.
Party. I agree on the water ballet thing but not on the golf one. I you try golf youll come to like or maybe love. And another thing Pro Golfer make upp 20 MILLION per year

Burnt out on Ballet..?

I'm 18 and have been dancing my entire life, but in the past 5 years I've begun to realize that having taken from a tiny private studio (the only thing available in my area) my whole life has made my technique well... remedial. I've gone away for summer intensives the last 4 summers, and am looking into college with the idea of majoring in ballet performance, but I'm beginning to wonder whether it's worth it to continue to sacrifice my precious senior year free time for a career I may have already missed the boat on.

If anyone out there has been in this situation I'd like to hear how you handled it, (ie, did you stay in it for fun, throw in the towel, stick it out, etc) and how that worked out for you.

Anything would be great!

Burnt out on Ballet..?greek theater

I promise you college will be the best thing you ever do with your life. But I always loved school in general anyway. So if you like school and you love dance then what could be better than the two of them combined?

Of course, if you plan to settle into your town where there is only one studio and don't opt to go up against that or change it then it's probably better to let your dreams go.

If you opt to major in ballet because you love it and dream for it to take you somewhere in life then what is the point of the question?

When I was a teenager I made the mistake of putting friends and tv and trivial things like dumb phone calls about boys first. Now those 'friends' are long gone, those tv shows don't matter to my present existence and I lost what was really important to me. I'd advise you not to do the same thing. I spent years dreaming of Getting It Back, when I could have kept with it in the first place. Don't waste time. Dance is a bigger ocean than that, do you really think there's only one boat?

Burnt out on Ballet..?performing arts show opera theater

Prioritize. What is most important to you? Having an active social life in your senior year, or pushing forward in ballet to excel? Even if the studio is "tiny and private," that doesn't mean that you don't have the strength and proper technique to excel in ballet!
Unless you are 300% sure that you want to have a career in dance, then don't waste your time. If you enjoy it and are serious about it, you aren't sacrificing free time. Since you look at it like that, I get the feeling you're about done. You can still keep dancing casually, but not as intense. Senior year is important, and only the dancers who really deticate everything to being a dancer make it; you would be wasting your own time and others.
if you still want to dance maybe you should consider a new style which would open your eyes to new possibilities or it may solidify your desire to stop. either way you will come out a winner. do what is best for you. do not go into a field of study that you will abandon midway through.
I have the same problem as you. I came from a small studio and i grew up a competition kid. But now I'm realizing that maybe a small studio isn't the best. And to add to the factor my parents never really supported dancing for me as a career, they thought of it as just a hobby. So when i would be dying to go to the studio 6 times a week they didn't want me to. I'm trying to face reality, but it seems to soon to just quit. Dancing will always be my passion, so i never want to quit. But i have to realize my childhood dance training could keep me from a professional career. Good luck!

Dance grades in ballet?

ive been doin ballet since 3 and am now 13 , ive gone on 2 pointe and am in inter foundation i know just about evry1z different but am i ahead or behind 13yr olds??

Dance grades in ballet?home theatre

It is not good to starte training en pointe too young, before the bones are developed. What is more important than what other dancers are doing is how well you are training, how well you study, what you know. Being a dancer doesn't exclude you from needing to know how to read, write, know history, music and foreign languages. Your line must be straight and your joints not out of alignment en pointe. Your movements must be clean and sharp. Your torso must be erect and balanced, and your axis of support directly over your contact with the floor. You must be able to land quietly on the floor without noise. You must feel your way through your up and down movements, in relation to the floor. The floor is your instrument, and you must push through it, brush across it, step onto it with a conscious sense of relationship and the sounds you are making. Your slippers must be well made, and you can reinforce the box with white shellac on the inside, and darning in overlapping V's on the toe with heavy heavy thread, so the slippers will last for months. You must read ballet history and learn about it so you know if you are getting good training or not. You must learn to read and listen to music, especially rhythm training. You have to hear and be able to know if it is a waltz, polonaise, or mazurka being played, and how to dance to it.

12-13 is the most typical age people start pointe so really you are right where you should be! i've seen younger and older people get on pointe but your right at that average age. =)

you can never be ahead in dance there is always room to develop. look up Janice bar anger books and Vito's.if you think u have passed what the school can offer move on to a pro school then u will see. not 2 b mean, but even the core DE ballet is always striving 2 get better to become a principal some day and she will say she is not yet mastered the art

Why are American men phobic of ballet?

In Europe and many Latin and Asian cultures ballet is considered to be masculine, and is equally enjoyed by men and women. Why are very young girls attracted to ballet in the USA, but is only mildly popular among young girls of other countries? What in American culture do think created this social stigma? Why is it still with us? What would make Americans change their view?

Why are American men phobic of ballet?palace theatre

I think it has to do with society. Our society dictates to us what is masculine and feminine, what's acceptable and what's not, what's fat and skinny, and on and on. For some reason the American society has dictated to us that Ballet is feminine and therefore, guys are afraid of it becuase then they will be perceived as feminine or gay just because they are in ballet.

Why are American men phobic of ballet?concert tickets opera theaterBECAUSE, ballet is full of queers, like ice capades and every other dramatic event that involves twister type dancing. Report It

It's all that mincing.
Well I'm from Canada and I was in a tap class when I was young, and I got beat up at school over it. So I punked out and quit. But I tell you, if you've ever actually tried to do what those dancers can do, you'll earn a huge respect for them. The beauty of dance like the taste of good scotch is an aquired taste for most. Most men just feel it's all pink outfits and girls pretending to be swans.
Because ballet is a scary SCARY GIRLY PANSYISH THING!!! I dont like it. Its for men who like to dance and want to be a girl
they have to protect their dignity, all they care about is having their dignity, doing ballet, their friends would make fun of them and they'd lose their dignity.
Because most people are idiots. I took a ballet course as an adult and it was heaven. It was about 15 to 1, men to women. I had a ton of dates with fit, athletic artistic women. I also got into incredible shape.

Any single guy that wants to have fun, work out and meet fascinating women that aren't drunk at some smoky bar needs to get into a class ASAP.

I only enjoyed going to the ballet when it involved a superstar though. Barishnikov or Nureyev etc.

They were just so much better than the local companies that it ruined trying to sit through the local stuff.
I can't answer for all American men, but I know it bores me greatly. I don't get the stories that the dances are trying to tell. Then again, I also hate musicals. I'm just not into performing arts like that.
Birdman and HisServ have it right. People are sheep. SHEEP I tell you. BAAAAAA
your question is needed the whole discovery of topic. may be few people can answer according to their opinion but i think u won't get the perfect one untill and unless u study the matter.. good luck i m sorry i won't comment anything on this coz i m also an american.
By the way I think Nathan C is drunk or stoned.

I agree with HisServ and also the guys who think it鈥檚 idiotic. I love ballet! Gorgeous, petite, women dancing like ethereal beings, what鈥檚 not to like? Well, I may be in a minority but I also love classical music. I wish the U.S. was not so hard on boys in ballet. I would have liked to have trained in it myself. I think it would have been a fun career, and ballet guys are fit, and I'm sure have plenty of hot dates.
Not, sadly, only American men. But as your question has centred on them I will try to stay with that.

I think it is partly because of fear, but also because of conditioning (though some of the fear is also conditioned),

partly because of inverse snobbery and finally - in a similar vein - because it is not truly "American". Heaven knows the USA has produced some outstanding workers and performers in ballet over that last 100 years but... "it just ain't American - Zeke, where's my gun?"
Stereotypes, society, images. We have high hopes for our little girls to be "princesses"-ballet lessons, piano lessons, things that "define" femininity-but we don't teach them to chew with their mouths closed or that modesty is a good thing. Sports, hunting, fishing, these are "manly" things that we want our boys to know. Truth is guys are afraid of it and put it off as one more thing they will never understand about women.
It's the men in tights. Male audience members feel that their "members" don't measure up! Oh, and those men have perfectly toned, muscular legs and butts to complement their magnificent bulges...

Ice Skating Of Course

I say quit the ice skating. I love it, and it's fun, but unless you go to the Olympics, the Ice Capades is all that is ahead of you. For ballet, there are lots of dancing shows you could get into, and it could give you "experience" for other types of dancing if you decide to branch off. Ice skating will always be on the ice, which will isolate your skills too much. Anyway, you can always ice skate for fun with friends but how many friends can ballet dance with you (and be good at it!) Drop the skates, keep the toe shoes!
much prefer ice skating
Hmmm..it's hard to choose though. I LOVE both...can't help ya.
Which are you the most advanced in and can go further with in a career?I would choose the one that I know I could become a major star in.Since I do not know how well you do with either one I can't give you an answer without crushing your hopes.Tell me how well you do in both before I can give you an honest opinion.
ballet you can skate much later in life than you can jump roundlike a fairy, when you hit 50 probably will still be ice skating but I cant i mean wont imagine a 50 year in a tutu with false hips and varacous veins like the london underground map stickwith skating
I would do the Ice skating because you could dance on skates!that way you can do both!!!
Ballet will give you a grounding for all types of dancing in the future, so keep it.

You can always skate on the weekends.
Hum that's a really tough one. Personally I like ballet better, but both sports really compliment eachother. Stick with ice skating because it's like two for one?

Good Luck!
don`t ask me make your own mind up
