What to wear to Ballet?

Okay, so I've started ballet class and the dress code is pink tights under black leotard, but my leotard curves up at the hips a little to high and I was wondering if it would be okay to wear shorts also? Or any other suggestions to wear so I don't look completely weird... thanks.

If you are serious about learning to dance, just wear the leotard and tights. Even if your teacher will let you wear the shorts, you really shouldn't. As a beginning dancer you want the teacher to see exactly what you are doing, to avoid learning bad habits that you will have to unlearn later. Even a dance skirt will hide the line of your legs and hips. When I was teaching ballet I would never have let my beginning students wear anything like that.

If it makes you uncomfortable, think about saving up for a new one, as a leotard for ballet class is not traditionally high-cut. But really, it's more important to learn to dance correctly that to worry about the cut of your leotard. Later on, if your keep up with it, you'll be able to wear different stuff, OK?

I would stick to the dress code. If you're that concerned, you might take the shorts with you to class and ask your instructor if you can wear them, but don't be dissapointed if he or she says no.
I would perhaps find another leotard or at least bring a skirt instead of/in addition to shorts.

Most ballet schools that have a dress code are fairly rigid about them.
Many studios do not allow pants or shorts over your leotard. The reason for this is because you cannot see your hips as well and this may effect your turnout. (A school i studied at did allow shorts after warm-ups were completed). The best suggestion I can give is a "wrap-skirt". Almost all studios allow these. They are sheer and short, so you can see your placement, but still give you the covering you want (Try www.discountdance.com). Another solution may be to change the leotard you are using. It sounds like you are wearing a "jazz-cut". They are higher cut to make your legs look longer. Try looking for leotards that say ballet-cut, they curve a little lower.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your class!
how old are you? are you old enough to shave your bikini line? anyways, if you are worried about being over exposed, wear tan or another pair of pink tights under your leotard. shorts are never acceptable. I had very stricked ballet teachers that would never allow certain things. You will not look weird because everyone else in the class should be dressed the same way. Also pull your tights up as high as possible, they are not to be worn down on the hips like jeans have been worn for a few years now. Dressing for ballet is traditional and does not follow trends as strickly as street clothing.
If I were you, I would buy a new leotard that fits properly. If that doesn't work you could buy a ballet skirt to tie over your leotard. Shorts may not be acceptable. If you are really concerned, you can ask your teacher if you can wear shorts or not.
I use to be really picky about how I looked without a skirt or shorts, after awhile you get use to it. You can buy some dance shorts or a black skirt to go with your outfit and I think it will be okay.
