The ballet thought of as being only for the aristocracy has been with us for a long time. You will find it 's strong influence in France, England and in my opinion the best, which is Russia. The dance spread widely through the Americas and has been with us every since. Who in the country hasn't see the Nut Cracker. Most of us have taken lessons in hopes of bringing grace and flow to our own movement. The Aristocracy no longer claims it for it's own as now ballet belongs to all of us.

i would say its the elite.

according to wikipedia, ruling courts watched ballet so i guess the wealthy would too.
Check the book - The Dancer Who Flew. It is about Nureyev and discusses the history of ballet a bit. Ballet started in France because a ruler of France was interested, but then a Frenchman moved to St. Petersburg and is largely responsible for the fantastic tradition of ballet at the Maryinsky School of Ballet and the Kirov Ballet both in St. Petersburg. Ballet is learned from a person who learned from a person who learned from .... Each dancer is very aware of with whom his/her teacher studied all the way back to the origin of ballet.
